Gothenburg is located on the west coast of Sweden and is the second-largest city in the country with just over 500,000 inhabitants. The area has been settled for many hundreds of years and the city was granted its charter in 1621. Gothenburg has the largest port in Scandinavia and has a long history of shipping and shipbuilding. The city is a mixture of old buildings and newly constructed areas that have been developed to keep pace with the growth of the city. Industrial concerns such as SKF and Volvo are an important part of industry in Gothenburg. Collaboration between the city, industry and R&D is the cornerstone in the development of Gothenburg.
